SEMINAR I – SPATIAL PRACTICES I
Composing with Sculptural Sound Phenomena in Computer Music.
Practical seminar on terms and compositional considerations in advanced loudspeaker environments.

The concept of the sculptural in computer music will be explained, learned and implemented in compositioninal practice. Based on different methods for the generation of sound textures, the two models of spatialization (1st and 2nd order) are treated first in order to be able to prepare and produce differentiated spatial textures. For this purpose, different loudspeaker systems (IKO, dome) and projection methods (WFS, Ambisonics) are used and compared. Based on this, body-space relations are modeled and discussed within compositional process. The resulting sculptural sound phenomena are then examined for their reproducibility and intersubjective qualities, in order to learn a productive and media-critical approach towards common sound projection methods.

SEMINAR II – SPATIAL PRACTICES II
Theory seminar
Space concepts in the auditive arts. Towards a Shared Perceptual Space – (SPS)

Acousmatic music is the only sonic medium that concentrates on space and spatial experience as aesthetically central.
(Smalley, 2007, 35)

Space plays a central role in loudspeaker music. The term space, however, has never been used consistently here. Through the investigation and discussion of various approaches from science and media theory from the past 70 years, the seminar aims to find out which space type or which spatial concept can make a practical contribution to contemporary composition. Interdisciplinary computer music always incorporates extra-musical spatial considerations. If we want to examine sculptural sound phenomena in compositional terms, we have to develop an understanding of room acoustics, different spatial concepts, different loudspeaker systems as well as the acoustic conditions of sound.
